Ninth-inning rally rescues 51s at Salt Lake

Wilfredo Tovar’s two-out RBI single in the ninth inning sent the 51s to a 3-2 victory over the Salt Lake Bees in a Pacific Coast League game Thursday in Salt Lake City.

Tovar, who had four hits in Las Vegas’ 9-3 win Wednesday, finished 3-for-4 as the 51s (64-49) won their fourth straight.

With one out in the ninth, Brandon Nimmo drew a walk off reliever Wesley Wright (0-1) and advanced to second on a single by Travis Taijeron. After pinch hitter Brandon Allen struck out, Tovar notched the decisive hit.

Tim Stauffer, making his second Las Vegas start since signing a minor league contract with the New York Mets on Saturday, held the Bees (44-69) to two runs on six hits and no walks and struck out three in seven innings. The 10-year major league veteran also hit two batters.

Dario Alvarez (2-0) pitched a perfect eighth, and three other 51s relievers notched one out apiece in the ninth.

Johnny Monell put Las Vegas up 1-0 in the first inning with a two-out RBI single, which Salt Lake answered in the second when Gary Brown hit a two-out RBI single.

Dilson Herrera led off the sixth with his sixth home run, and the Bees countered when Kaleb Cowart hit the first pitch of the bottom of the inning for his fifth homer.

Cowart and Alfredo Marte had two hits apiece for Salt Lake, which matched the 51s’ seven hits.

Bees starter Tyler DeLoach gave up two runs on three hits and four walks and struck out seven in 5 2/3 innings.
