Dooley principal reassigned in wake of parent, teacher complaints

The principal at Henderson’s Dooley Elementary School was reassigned Friday following a weekslong campaign against her by some parents and teachers.

The Clark County School District said Friday that Shannon Schumm would be temporarily assigned to a role in the district’s central office. She will be replaced on Monday by a veteran principal and acting administrator, who was not immediately named.

The district said in a statement, “In order to ensure a positive learning environment exists for all, the decision was made to reassign the principal at John A. Dooley Elementary School. The education of our students is our priority and we have to ensure that we keep that at the forefront of what we do and apart from adult issues.”

The conflict between parents and teachers and Schumm and her supporters, including Trustee Deanna Wright, came to a head at Thursday’s School Board meeting.

Several parents and one teacher accused Schumm of creating a hostile environment at the school. One issue parents complained about was Schumm’s decision to end the longtime practice of a daily hourlong recess for students at the school, near Boulder Highway and Magic Way.

Dooley is one of the district’s highest-ranked elementary schools with a five-star rating. It was named a 2014 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. secretary of education, one of 337 schools in the nation to earn that recognition.
