Brewers OF forgives Mets pitcher for fastball to head

In a scary moment in Sunday’s Mets-Brewers game at Citi Field, Milwaukee outfielder Carlos Gomez was hit in the head by a 97-mph fastball fired by New York pitcher Noah Syndergaard.

Fortunately, Gomez escaped virtually unscathed, walking off the field under his own power and sporting only a postgame bruise on the side of his face where the ball struck his batting helmet.

Nicknamed “Thor” for his 6-foot-6-inch frame, blonde mane and last name that sounds like the superhero’s home planet of Asgard, Syndergaard reached out to Gomez after the game on Twitter.

“To see people dressed as #Thor was as cool as getting a win! And to @C_Gomez27, glad you’re ok. #LGM,” wrote Syndergaard, the 22-year-old who won his first game in his second big-league start after getting called up from the 51s on May 8.

The gracious Gomez replied with two tweets to the rookie: “Thx for the concern bro, it’s part of the game. Thank God I’m ok. Keep up the good work, ur going to be a great pitcher!”; and “Put that behind you brother, continue to work hard. Good luck and God bless!!”

In winning his Citi Field debut for the Mets, Syndergaard allowed one run on three hits with six strikeouts and a walk in six innings. The right-hander went 3-0 with a 1.82 ERA and had 34 strikeouts and eight walks in 29 2/3 innings this season for Triple-A Las Vegas.
