Metro motorcycle officer hospitalized after crash

A Las Vegas police traffic officer was hospitalized after a crash Monday evening in a southwest valley intersection.

Police responded just before 5 p.m. to the intersection of Desert Inn Road and South Tenaya Way where an officer “went down on his police motorcycle,” Metro wrote in a release.

The officer, who was not named, was traveling east on Desert Inn in the center travel lane behind a Hyundai Tucson. The SUV slowed as it approached a yellow traffic signal at Tenaya and the police motorcycle hit the back of the vehicle, according to witness statements and evidence at the scene.

The officer was thrown from his bike and onto the road. He was taken to University Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to Metro Lt. Dave Valenta.

The intersection of Desert Inn and Tenaya was closed while police investigated the cause of the crash.
