Las Vegas police arrest man in July shooting death

Updated October 1, 2019 - 8:25 pm

Las Vegas police have arrested a 35-year-old man in connection with a fatal July shooting at a central valley extended-stay complex.

Marquis Lavont was arrested Monday and has been charged with murder in the death of 28-year-old Rayvon Williams, police said.

About 7:45 p.m. July 8, officers patrolling on the 3600 block of Paradise Road, near Twain Avenue, heard gunfire from an apartment complex. Police soon received reports of a shooting and found Williams lying near the doorway of his apartment at the Emerald Suites, 3684 Paradise Road.

He died at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center from a gunshot wound to his chest, the Clark County coroner’s office has said. His death was ruled a homicide.

The night of the shooting, Metro Sgt. Jon Scott said Williams was seen arguing with two men and possibly a woman inside and just outside his apartment. After the gunfire rang out, everyone at the apartment fled, police said.

Metro and jail records identified the suspect as Marquis Lavont, but court records list his name as Marquis Lavont Keith.

Court records show that an arrest warrant for the 35-year-old was granted Aug. 16. He was arrested Monday without incident at a North Las Vegas home on the 1800 block of Las Vegas Boulevard North, near Fifth Street, police said.

He has a history of arrests in Clark County dating to 2006, most related to burglary, robbery or larceny, court records show.

In July 2017 he pleaded guilty to battery with substantial bodily harm in a district court case, and a bench warrant was issued after he failed to appear at a November 2017 sentencing hearing.

Lavont remained at the Clark County Detention Center on Tuesday without bail, jail records show. Court records do not list any co-defendants in the murder case.

Further information about Lavont’s arrest was not available Tuesday.
