NJ casinos hit with power outage after lightning strike

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — A lightning strike caused power to go out in several Atlantic City casinos for several hours early Sunday.

Atlantic City Electric tells the Press of Atlantic City a power line was struck shortly after 1 a.m., leaving about 9,400 customers without power.

The city’s fire department said it responded to calls from Bally’s Atlantic City, Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, Ocean Casino Resort and Resorts Casino Hotel where patrons were stuck in elevators. Staff at Harrah’s were able to get a person out of a stuck elevator.

Gamblers went on social media to describe walking through darkened casino floors.

They were unlikely to lose money from slot machines due to the outage. The machines use battery-operated, uninterruptible power supplies. Loyalty program cards also record all play.
