Motorcyclist critically hurt in Las Vegas crash near gravel pit

Updated June 30, 2019 - 10:57 pm

A motorcyclist is in critical condition after a crash near a gravel pit Sunday afternoon in the east valley, Las Vegas police said.

The man “apparently hit gravel in (the) roadway and went down” about 3:20 p.m. in the area of Los Feliz Street and Alto Avenue, north of Cary Avenue, Metropolitan Police Department Lt. Chris Holmes said. He was riding a newly paved road leading to the pit, Holmes said.

A Metro release later said a 42-year-old man was riding the 2018 Harley Davidson Street Glide west on Alto and approaching a “mild curve in the roadway” at the intersection with Los Feliz. The Harley Davidson was traveling fast, and the rider braked, leaving behind “ample skid” on the road before going down, the release said.

The motorcycle spun clockwise while sliding west on its right side, “causing the Harley to right itself, then immediately fall onto its left side as the ride separated from the vehicle,” the release said.

The man was taken to University Medical Center in critical condition. Police didn’t think he was impaired.

Metro’s fatal crash team is investigating.
