Motorcyclist critical after collision in northeast Las Vegas
A motorcyclist was critically injured in a crash involving an SUV and a pickup truck Saturday afternoon in the northeast valley, according to Las Vegas police.
About 2:30 p.m., a motorcycle operated by a 28-year-old Las Vegas man was southbound on North Nellis Boulevard, approaching a green light at East Cheyenne Avenue, when a 1997 Toyota Rav4 made a right turn onto Nellis from eastbound Cheyenne, against a red light, Las Vegas police wrote in a release Saturday night.
The front of the motorcycle, a 2006 Honda CBR 600, struck the left rear side of the Rav4, which was driven by an 83-year-old Las Vegas woman.
The motorcyclist was thrown from the motorcycle and hit the left rear side of a 2004 Dodge Ram that had been traveling north on Nellis. He was taken to University Medical Center with critical injuries, police wrote in the release.
Police initially reported on Saturday afternoon that the motorcyclist had died at the hospital, but a Metropolitan Police Department spokesman later corrected that information.
The man was still in critical condition as of 8 p.m., according to Metro Lt. Peter Kisfalvi.
The woman driving the Rav4 suffered minor injuries, the release said. The 58-year-old man who was driving the truck, and his passenger, a 41-year-old woman, both from Las Vegas, were not injured.
Neither party showed signs of impairment, police wrote in the release.
The intersection of Nellis and Cheyenne was closed in both directions for several hours while police investigated. Traffic cameras showed roads reopened just before 7:40 p.m.
