A woman died after a 2017 Jeep Cherokee hit her while she was crossing the street in the east valley Thursday.

The incident occurred about 6 p.m. on the 5000 block of East Russell Road west of Galleria Drive, according to a Metropolitan Police Department release. The woman, whom police did not identify, was crossing northbound on Galleria when the truck, headed west on Russell, struck her.

The Jeep Cherokee driver, a 57-year-old Las Vegas man, was not impaired at the time, the release said.

The pedestrian was transported to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, according to police.

Traffic was diverted at Russell Road and Nellis Boulevard, and at Russell Road and West Galleria Drive following the incident.

The death is the 131st traffic-related fatality reported to Metro this year.
