Highlights from Week 5 of high school football
Here’s a look at what happened during Week 5 of the high school football season.
What we learned
1. Don’t count out Faith Lutheran.
Just when it looked like the Crusaders’ season might be on the ropes, backup quarterback Connor Paravia engineered an unlikely comeback for the team’s first win of the season.
Palo Verde jumped out to a 17-0 lead Saturday, and Faith Lutheran quarterback Sagan Gronauer went down with a foot injury.
Lights out for the Crusaders? Nope.
Paravia and Faith Lutheran scored 20 fourth-quarter points to pull out a Northwest League win. The bad news is there are no easy nights in the Northwest. Unlike the Northeast, the Northwest has combined for 16 wins, and half of the league’s losses have come in league games.
2. Arbor View is clearly the class of the Northwest. Not that that’s big news, but the Aggies played part of Saturday’s game against Shadow Ridge with a running clock and won 55-26.
This was the same Shadow Ridge team that had outscored opponents 145-49 and was ranked No. 7 against Class 4A clubs.
Looks like Arbor View is on track for a fourth straight league title.
3. The Northeast League is a train wreck right now, and four of the five teams will make the postseason.
The league has combined to go 2-19 to start the season, and even league favorite Canyon Springs is 1-4 (although two of the losses were forfeits following last week’s brawl with Basic).
Canyon Springs and Las Vegas generally are quality programs, but the Wildcats fell to 0-4 under first-year coach Erick Capetillo, and look like shadows of their former selves.
All of that has to have Southeast League teams salivating, at least for the first-round playoff matchups.

Upset of the week
Virgin Valley 30, Sunrise Mountain 27 — This was as close as we got to a true upset this week, although the Bulldogs winning this nonleague game at home was hardly a shock.
Lane Ramos kicked a field goal to give the Bulldogs the lead, and the Miners, ranked No. 5 in Class 3A, missed a late field goal that would have tied it. Both teams figure to be contenders in the Class 3A leagues.
