Gorman WR Tyjon Lindsey commits to Ohio State

Tyjon Lindsey’s high school football career remains unclear, but his college plans are set.

Lindsey, who re-enrolled at Bishop Gorman last week after transferring from the school in February, made an oral commitment to Ohio State on Monday. The senior wide receiver announced his decision in a video that was released on his official Twitter account.

Lindsey’s commitment is nonbinding, and the first day he can sign a letter of intent is Feb. 1. Ohio State’s coaches cannot comment until that time.

Lindsey is rated one of the top slot receivers in the class of 2017 by most major internet recruiting services. The 5-foot-9-inch, 175-pound standout had 45 receptions for 1,117 yards and 14 touchdowns last season and was a first-team all-state selection by the Review-Journal, helping the Gaels to their second straight mythical national championship.

Lindsey announced in February he was transferring from the school to return to his native California and enrolled at powerhouse Corona Centennial. But he left Centennial last week, and Gaels football coach Kenny Sanchez confirmed Monday that Lindsey is a Gorman student.

It is uncertain whether Lindsey will be eligible to play for the Gaels in their season opener on Saturday when they visit Cedar Hill (Texas) in a matchup of nationally ranked teams.

Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association regulations stipulate transfer students must complete 10 practice days at their new school before becoming eligible, and Lindsey’s complicated case also could involve several other NIAA rules regarding transfer students.

Gorman assistant athletic director Grant Rice declined to comment on Lindsey’s eligibility. NIAA assistant director Donnie Nelson said Monday afternoon that Gorman has not filed any paperwork with his office on the matter.

Lindsey had more than 20 known scholarship offers, and he is the third player from Gorman to commit to the Buckeyes for 2017, joining quarterback Tate Martell and defensive lineman Haskell Garrett.

Lindsey chose Ohio State over Nebraska, his other finalist. His decision was unveiled at the end of a 1-minute, 25-second video in which Lindsey and fellow Buckeyes commit Trevon Grimes participate in a game of dodgeball.
