Las Vegas Valley getting more rainy, windy weather

Updated February 4, 2019 - 9:31 pm

Wet weather in the Las Vegas Valley should dissipate by Wednesday, but a chill is here to stay through the rest of the workweek, according to the National Weather Service.

A winter storm warning that went into effect on Mount Charleston on Monday will last until 4 a.m. Wednesday in areas 5,500 feet and above, with 8 to 15 inches of snow expected, the weather service said.

There is a 50 percent for rain in the valley during the day Tuesday. While precipitation chances drop to 20 percent Tuesday night, a cold front coming into the valley could make for some snow flurries in the evening.

“It’s one of those, ‘Oh my, God!’ It’s snowing!” moments, but don’t expect anything to accumulate if flurries do fall, meteorologist Clay Morgan said.

Winds should blow between 15 and 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph, he said.

Tuesday’s forecast high is 51 degrees, followed by highs of 48 on Wednesday and 47 on Thursday. The high temperature should rebound a tad on Friday to 50 degrees. The second half of the workweek should be sunny and dry.

Lows Wednesday, Thursday and Friday will drop from 33 to 32 to 31 degrees, respectively, Morgan said.

Typical temperatures for this time of year are about 60 for the high and about 41 for the low.

This year has been a wet one for Las Vegas, with 1.29 inches falling since Jan. 1. That is well above the average of 0.6 of an inch, but is comparable to 2018, meteorologist Jenn Varian said.

While chances for snow may be slight in Las Vegas, snow is almost a certainty at Mount Charleston on Tuesday.
