Veteran Aces guard leaving to play behind Caitlin Clark

Updated February 4, 2025 - 6:49 pm

Veteran guard Sydney Colson is leaving the Aces to sign with the Indiana Fever, her agent, Gina Paradiso, told the Review-Journal on Tuesday.

Colson, 35, has spent the past three seasons with the Aces, winning WNBA championships in 2022 and 2023. She also played for the team in 2019 and for the previous incarnation of the franchise in San Antonio from 2015-17.

She averaged 2.5 points, 0.5 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 8.0 minutes per game last season, which was nearly double the amount of playing time she saw in 2023.

Colson, an unrestricted free agent, said in October that she hoped to return to the Aces but knew nothing was “guaranteed.”

After trading Kelsey Plum for former Seattle Storm guard Jewell Loyd and signing rookie center Elizabeth Kitley, the Aces have around $407,000 in cap room. They have still yet to re-sign two veterans, guard Tiffany Hayes and forward Alysha Clark. The lowest either of them can sign for is the veteran minimum of $78,831 each, and the Aces haven’t made any other additions.

Colson’s addition to the Fever marks the latest move in an effort to build a veteran core around superstar guard Caitlin Clark, last season’s Rookie of the Year.

In Colson, Indiana has a backup point guard for Clark who was often heralded as a positive locker room presence and defensive spark off the bench for the Aces.

Led by a completely overhauled front office featuring new general manager Amber Cox and former Connecticut Sun coach Stephanie White, the Fever recently re-signed guard Kelsey Mitchell, traded with the Phoenix Mercury for guard Sophie Cunningham, and acquired veteran forwards Natasha Howard and DeWanna Bonner in free agency.

Those players, plus the young core of Clark, forward Aliyah Boston and guard Lexie Hull, made Indiana an attractive destination for Colson, sources with knowledge of the situation said.

Mitchell and Colson are good friends, having both previously played in the offseason women’s basketball league Athletes Unlmited. Colson is currently in Nashville, Tennessee, to play in her fourth season with the league.

Colson was also excited after talks about “minutes, usage and veteran leadership,” a source said.

“The basketball is and has always been her heart. And she gets to show all of us it in Indy,” Paradiso said.
