UNLV president unhappy with state of football program; Sanford scrutinized game-to-game
UNLV President Neal Smatresk isn’t happy with the state of the football program, indicating coach Mike Sanford’s future could be determined during this season.
The Rebels lost 63-28 at UNR on Saturday, giving up 773 yards. UNLV dropped to 2-3 and is 13-39 under Sanford, now in his fifth season.
"The game was very disappointing," Smatresk said. "We are concerned for our student-athletes, we are concerned for our fans, and we’ll be keeping an eye on the situation on a game-to-game basis to see how things go. We’re going to be watching."
Sanford did not comment.
He earns $425,000 per season. If Sanford were fired before Dec. 4, he would be paid a buyout of $287,500. His buyout during the extended portion of the contract is $225,000. Sanford signed a three-year extension last year, taking him through the 2012 season.
UNLV next plays No. 20 Brigham Young (4-1) at 7 p.m. Saturday at Sam Boyd Stadium.
