UNLV defense rests … again

UNLV president Neal Smatresk promised early last week he would be closely watching the football program, and said Rebels coach Mike Sanford was being evaluated on a weekly basis.

Sanford must shoulder full blame

If this is bouncing back, I’d hate to see what UNLV’s football team looks like when it’s not focused.

Rebels’ performance could come down to effort

Effort should be the one guaranteed trait a football player owns. Speed. Strength. Skill. Smarts. You can lack in all of these and still play hard.

BYU can exploit weaknesses

Brigham Young senior quarterback Max Hall was careful not to criticize UNLV’s defense after watching videotape of the Rebels’ 63-28 loss at UNR. He said the football game wasn’t indicative of what he expects to face when the No. 18 Cougars play UNLV at 7 p.m. Saturday at Sam Boyd Stadium.

Smatresk won’t silently stand by

I have met UNLV president Neal Smatresk once. I have spoken to him twice. I know he ran track and swam in high school. I know he has a daughter who played soccer and a son who played baseball. I know his wife enjoys watching volleyball.

BYU’s success relative

Brigham Young coach Bronco Mendenhall can’t control perception, but he knows the implications are real.

It’s official… Sanford in hot seat

UNLV football coach Mike Sanford now is under the microscope of the university president’s office. … President Neal Smatresk said Monday he was troubled by the state of the program following Saturday’s 63-28 loss at the University of Nevada, Reno, in which the Rebels gave up 773 yards. … The Rebels dropped to 2-3 and are 13-39 under Sanford, who is in his fifth season.

If Sanford can’t get team back, UNLV must fire him

Mike Sanford has to be coaching for his job on a weekly basis now. If he’s not, it will be because his superiors at UNLV have forgotten the most significant rule: the program comes first.

Rebels can’t run with Pack

RENO — Imagine how bad it would’ve been for UNLV if UNR hadn’t turned over the football four times.

Injured QB Clayton never gets on field

RENO — UNLV coach Mike Sanford said all week the availability of injured quarterback Omar Clayton would be a game-time decision but that the junior would play against UNR on Saturday.

UNLV-UNR misconceptions abound

RENO–As the seconds tick down to yet another kickoff for UNLV-UNR football today and some take odds on whether Mike Sanford will enter Mackay Stadium on an elephant to fully experience the circus atmosphere he insists is part of the state rivalry game, it’s important to clear up a few misconceptions regarding the Limited Access Bowl.

October again key for UNLV

RENO — It’s not as if Mike Sanford’s record is sparkling the other months of the season, but October has been particularly cruel to the UNLV football coach.

Ex-Desert Pines star scores 5 TDs, leads Wolf Pack past Rebels 63-28

UPDATE: Imagine how bad it would’ve been for UNLV if UNR hadn’t turned over the football four times. … Those fumbles allowed the Rebels to hang around for most of the game today, but they clearly were outclassed by a team that previously hadn’t beaten anyone. … The Wolf Pack eventually hung onto the ball and blasted UNLV late, totaling 773 yards in a 63-28 victory at Mackay Stadium in Reno to keep the Fremont Cannon blue for the fifth consecutive year. … Desert Pines High School graduate Mike Ball had 184 yards and five touchdowns.
