No. 15 Utah rumbles over Lady Rebels
SALT LAKE CITY — The UNLV women’s basketball team ended the regular season on a rough note, losing to No. 15 Utah 82-46 on Saturday as the Utes completed a perfect Mountain West Conference season and won their 22nd straight game.
Leilani Mitchell had 14 points and 13 assists to lead Utah (27-3, 16-0 MWC), which locked up the league title a week ago. All that was left was becoming the first team to go unbeaten in the conference since the Utes did it in 2000-01. That Utah team went 28-4 and has the school record for victories in a season.
Utah shot 50 percent, made 9 of 10 free throws and forced UNLV (8-21, 4-12) into 16 turnovers. The Utes also outrebounded the Rebels, 45-29.
Sequoia Holmes had 15 points and Brittany Halberg 14 for UNLV, which shot 28 percent in the first half and 30.4 percent for the game.
UNLV, seeded eighth, will meet ninth-seeded Colorado State on Tuesday in the Mountain West Conference play-in game, with the winner facing Utah on Wednesday.
