Rebels looking to end streak

LARAMIE, Wyo. — UNLV is minutes away trying to end a 19-game road losing streak against Mountain West Conference opponents.

But the Rebels shouldn’t face much of a home-field advantage, even with the sign that welcomes them to an elevation of 7,220 feet. Probably no more than 20,000 fans are expected, and this isn’t the type of Wyoming weather UNLV usually faces. The high is expected to be 75 degrees.

Still, with that kind of road skid, the test will come if UNLV finds itself in a tight spot. Will the Rebels press or make plays like they did in beating Hawaii 34-33 last Saturday?

STAYING HOME

UNLV wide receiver Rodelin Anthony and safety Marquel Martin did not make the trip because of concussions. Both were ruled out earlier in the week.

Now the question is whether safety Alex De Giacomo, who has an injured hamstring, will play. He was listed as questionable.

UPSET TIME?

On ESPN’s College GameDay, Lee Corso predicted the Rebels, favored by 3 1/2 points, to lose as his upset special. Two weeks ago, Kirk Herbstreit had UNLV beating Oregon State in his upset special. The Rebels nearly pulled it off before losing 23-21 on a field goal with 7 seconds left.

 UPDATE:

CHANGE OF STRATEGY

UNLV won the coin toss and elected to receive. Rebels coach Mike Sanford almost always defers the choice to the second half, so it was a surprise. No one in the press box can remember Sanford not deferring.
