Women’s golfers fall back at home
The UNLV women’s golf team took a step back in its Spring Invitational, shooting 14-over-par 302 Tuesday in the second round to drop from first place to sixth at Boulder Creek Golf Club.
Freshman Therese Koelbaek shot 1-under 71 for the second straight day, tying for sixth individually with a 2-under 142 total. But no other Rebel shot under par, with Natasha Krishna putting up the second-best effort at 4-over 76 to stand tied for 21st at 2-over 146.
Washington State shot 1-over 289 to take the team lead at 2-under 574, three strokes ahead of Brigham Young in the 18-team field. UNLV, which shot 284 Monday, was at 10-over 586.
Oregon’s Cathryn Bristow (69) and Idaho’s Kelly Nakashima (70) were tied for the individual lead at 6-under 138.
The final round will begin at 7:30 a.m. today.
• MEN’S GOLF — UNLV was named Golfweek’s National Team of the Week after winning its Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship on Sunday.
The Rebels, playing a field that featured seven of the nation’s top 10 teams, shot 5-over 869 to beat No. 4 Charlotte by two shots and top-ranked Georgia by three.
UNLV jumped from 22nd to 14th in the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings.
• BASEBALL — J.J. Sferra went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored, leading UNLV past Southern Utah 6-4 at Wilson Stadium.
Jesse Wight was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored for the Rebels (7-7).
Steve Rinaudo went 2-for-4 with an RBI for UNLV, and Jarred Frierson went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
