UNLV’s Penner claims title in All-America Golf Classic

UNLV’s Kevin Penner won the Sun Bowl College All-America Golf Classic on Tuesday in El Paso, Texas.

Penner, a senior, shot 3-under 68 in the third round to go with his 65-66 efforts in Monday’s first two rounds, and he finished at 14-under 199 in an individual tournament featuring many of the top college players in the country.

Penner edged Arkansas’ Sebastian Cappelan, who shot a blistering 63 in the final round to finish at 200. Alabama’s Cory Whitsett, tied with Penner after the first two rounds, shot 1-under 70 to take third at 201.

In other UNLV men’s golf news, coach Dwaine Knight announced that he received letters of intent from two players: Foothill High School standout Taylor Montgomery and Chris Tuulik of La Jolla (Calif.) High School.

Montgomery, the son of former UNLV All-American Monte Montgomery (1989-92), was the 2011 Class 4A state boys champion and the 2012 Sunrise Region Golfer of the Year. He also won the American Junior Golf Association’s Las Vegas Junior Open last summer.
