UNLV women golfers still third in MWC tournament
The UNLV women’s golf team shot 14-over-par 306 Friday to remain third after the second round of the Mountain West Conference Championships at Albuquerque, N.M.
The Rebels are 30-over 614 entering today’s final round at the Championship Course. Host New Mexico leads at 5-over 589, followed by Brigham Young at 603.
UNLV freshmen Therese Koelbaek and Alejandra Guacaneme are in the top 10 individually. Koelbaek is tied for fifth at 3-over 149, four strokes behind leader Britney Choy of New Mexico. Guacaneme is tied for eighth at 7-over 153.
Rebels sophomore Natasha Krishna is tied for 11th at 9-over 155. Senior Tonya Choate and junior Kasi Lee are tied for 19th at 159.
• UNLV BASEBALL — Stephen Strasburg allowed five hits and struck out 13 in seven innings to lead San Diego State to a 17-1 victory over UNLV at Wilson Stadium.
The performance came a week after Strasburg struck out an MWC-record 23 against Utah.
Leading 4-0, the league-leading Aztecs (23-15, 10-3) blew the game open with 10 runs in the fifth — hitting three home runs and two triples — against three Rebels pitchers.
Matt Hutchison took the loss for UNLV (16-20, 5-8), giving up eight runs on 10 hits in four innings.
• UNLV SOFTBALL — The Rebels blew seventh-inning leads in each game and were swept in Fort Collins, Colo., by Colorado State, 14-13 and 7-6.
UNLV (21-30-1, 1-7 MWC) set season highs in the first game in runs and hits (16).
The top six hitters in the Rebels’ lineup went 13-for-24 in the first game, led by leadoff batter Brittany Bolinger, who went 4-for-5 and scored three runs. But the Rams (22-16, 2-5) scored three unearned runs in the seventh to win.
In the second game, UNLV took a 6-5 lead into the bottom of the seventh, but Stephanie Bregante gave up a one-out, two-run homer to Robyn Mask.
• CSN BASEBALL — The College of Southern Nevada got two strong pitching performances in a sweep of the College of Eastern Utah at Price, Utah.
Taylor Cole allowed one run on four hits in six innings in a 2-1 victory in the first game.
In a 7-1 victory in the second game, Egan Smith tossed seven scoreless innings and struck out seven for the Coyotes (31-14, 20-10 Scenic West).
• CSN SOFTBALL — Mandy Tapia got a victory and a save for CSN in its sweep of Snow College at Russell Road Recreation Complex.
Tapia allowed one run on two hits in a 6-1 victory in the first game. In the second game, Tapia tossed two scoreless innings to get the save in a 7-2 victory.
Allison Barr hit three home runs and drove in five runs in the second game for the Coyotes (24-22, 19-15 SWAC).
