UNLV men’s golf wins Arizona State tourney

The UNLV men’s golf team shot 7-under 277 on Sunday to edge top-ranked California and win the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. UNLV finished at 9-under 843, one stroke ahead of Cal in the 18-team, three-round event.

Kevin Penner and Kurt Kitayama paced the Rebels, with Penner shooting 4-under 67 and Kitayama shooting 69 as the two tied for fifth at 6-under 207, five strokes behind winner Nick Chianello of Oregon State.

■ BASEBALL — UNLV lost to Fresno State 5-3 in a Mountain West contest at Wilson Stadium. T.J. White went 3-for-5 with a run scored for the Rebels (22-9, 7-5 MW), and Joey Swanner was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

■ SOFTBALL — UNLV lost to Fresno State 6-4 in Mountain West play at Eller Media Stadium. The Rebels (16-22, 2-4) let a 4-0 lead slip away on two home runs — a Michelle Solomon grand slam in the third inning, and Stesha Brazil’s two-run shot in the seventh.

UNLV got all its runs in the second inning, on a Pauline Monreal homer and Stefany Valentino’s three-run double.

■ MEN’S TENNIS — At Air Force Academy, Colo., UNLV blanked Air Force 7-0 at Air Force Academy, Colo. Ace Matias led the Rebels (15-5, 3-1 Mountain West) with a straight-set win at No. 1 singles.

■ WOMEN’S TENNIS — At San Diego, UNLV routed New Mexico 7-0 on neutral courts at San Diego State. Lucia Batta led five straight-set singles wins for the Rebels (12-6, 2-1 Mountain West) with her victory at No. 2.
