UNLV golfers third after regional first round

Sophomore Blake Biddle shot a 2-under-par 70 Thursday as UNLV finished the first round of the 54-hole NCAA Greensboro (N.C.) Regional tied for third place, 10 strokes behind first-place Liberty.

UNLV shot 5-over-par 293 at the Grandover Resort’s East Course and is tied with Tulsa. Southern Methodist is five shots behind Liberty, which shot 5-under 283.

The top five teams advance to the NCAA Championships in Los Angeles from May 29 through June 3.

The Rebels are without coach Dwaine Knight, who is recuperating from melanoma surgery on his right foot last week. He remained in Las Vegas, and assistant JC Deacon is handling the team.

UNLV freshman Carl Johnson shot 73. Senior Derek Ernst and junior Kevin Penner each shot 3-over 75, and freshman Kurt Kitayama shot 82. The top four scores count toward the team total.
