Rebels rally, salvage weekend baseball finale from Fresno State

Payton Squier, Cooper Esmay and Cody Howard drove in two runs apiece to rally UNLV to an 8-5 victory over Fresno State in a Mountain West baseball game Sunday at Wilson Stadium.

The Rebels (23-28, 13-14) trailed 3-0 before scoring five runs in the fourth inning and three in the fifth to avoid being swept in the three-game weekend set.

Squier, Esmay and Howard each had one RBI in each multiple-run inning as UNLV won for the second time in six games and halted the Bulldogs’ five-game winning streak.

Squier finished 3-for-4 and threw out a runner at the plate from left field to end Fresno State’s two-run seventh inning.

Esmay, Howard and Austin Anderson had two hits apiece for the Rebels, who were outhit 14-13.

UNLV starter Dean Kremer (4-4) gave up three runs on eight hits and no walks and struck out two in five innings. Ben Wright worked the final three innings to post his 11th save.

Austin Guibor went 3-for-5 with a double, and Scott Silva, Zach Ashford, Jake Stone and Jesse Medrano had two hits each for the Bulldogs (35-18, 21-9), who lost for just the second time in 11 games.
