Penner takes first as UNLV places second in Mountain West men’s golf tourney

UNLV senior Kevin Penner fired a final-round 4-under-par 67 Sunday and captured the individual championship at the Mountain West Men’s Golf Championships in Tucson, Ariz.

Penner finished the tournament at 7-under 206 and won by one stroke over New Mexico’s James Erkenbeck.

As a team, UNLV tied for second with San Diego State at even-par 213 — eight shots behind tourney winner New Mexico.

■ UNLV SOFTBALL — Heather Harrison belted a grand slam and Tayler Aleman added a solo home run to lead the Rebels to a 5-0 victory over Boise State at Eller Media Stadium.

The Rebels improved to 21-28 overall, 7-8 in league.

■ FORMER PREP STANDOUT WINS — Former Legacy High standout Avione Allgood, a freshman at Oklahoma, captured the Big 12 Conference women’s javelin championship in Waco, Texas, with a throw of 52.10 meters.
