Medley relay, Polee propel Rebels in indoor track

UNLV turned in two of the best indoor track performances in program history Friday on the first day of the Jacksons Invitational-New Balance West meet at Nampa, Idaho.

The Rebels’ distance medley foursome of Laura Affeld, Christine Lowe, Brett Zorich and Ali Bartosch finished fourth in a time of 12 minutes, 40.4 seconds, the third fastest in school history.

Talyah Polee, a senior from Victorville, Calif., finished fourth in the pentathlon with 2,998 points, fifth most in school history. Her performance was highlighted by a second-place finish in the long jump and third in the high jump.

Sophomore Emily Blok ran the second-fastest time of the day in the 200 meters (24.64 seconds), Deja Edwards was second in the long jump (5.55 meters) and Lauren Peterson finished third in the 3,000 meters in 10:26.84.

■ UNLV MEN’S TENNIS — The Rebels got singles victories from Mehdi Bouras, Johannes Markel, Tamas Batyi, Rene Ruegamer and Bernard Schoeman in a 5-2 victory over Arkansas in Fayetteville. UNLV improved to 3-1.

■ UNLV WOMEN’S TENNIS — The 29th-ranked Rebels were upset by No. 39 Oklahoma 4-1 in the first round of the ITA Kickoff Weekend Playoff at Palo Alto, Calif. Freshman Aleksandra Josifoska got the only point for UNLV (3-1).

■ CSN SOFTBALL — The Coyotes opened their season by winning two of three games on the first day of the CSN Kickoff Classic at Craig Park. They beat GateWay Community College of Phoenix, 9-2; lost to South Mountain CC of Phoenix, 9-8; and beat Pima CC of Tucson, 5-2.
