Kinsinger, UNLV golfers off to hot start
Senior Matt Kinsinger shot 4-under-par 68 to share the lead and UNLV was in second place after the first round of the Southern Highland Collegiate Championship on Friday.
Kinsinger, medalist in the Southern Highlands event in 2006, is tied with Jonas Enander Hedin of Charlotte.
Defending tournament champion Southern California was the only team to break par, firing 3-under 285 for a three-shot edge over 22nd-ranked UNLV and UCLA. Charlotte and Georgia are at 1-over 289.
The 15-team event continues with 18 holes today and Sunday.
UNLV BASEBALL
• San Francisco 8, UNLV 7 — At Wilson, Tavo Hall led off the 13th inning with his fourth hit and scored on a groundout as the Dons edged the Rebels ( 5-6). Braden Walker was 5-for-7 for UNLV, Xavier Scruggs 4-for-6 and Jesse Wight 3-for-6.
UNLV SOFTBALL
• UNLV 5, Portland State 2 — At Eller Media Stadium, the Rebels’ Stephanie Bregante (7-6) pitched six shutout innings and struck out five to lift the Rebels (14-10-1) in their UNLV Invitational opener. Brittany Bolinger hit a solo homer.
• Ohio State 2, UNLV 1 — Heather Slettvet pitched five no-hit innings, but the Rebels lost to the No. 20 Buckeyes. UNLV was shut out until Laura Briones’ RBI single in the seventh. The Rebels left the tying run on base.
CSN BASEBALL
• CSN 3-7, Colorado Northwestern CC 1-1 — The College of Southern Nevada (14-7, 3-3 Scenic West) allowed six hits in its home sweep, getting wins by Colby Shreve (4-0) and Egan Smith (3-1). Brandon Trodick had four hits and five RBIs.
CSN SOFTBALL
• CSN 4-4, North Idaho 3-0 — CSN (13-7, 8-2) got complete-game wins by Mandy Tapia (7-4) and Christina Jones (6-3) to win twice at home. Amy Aicher hit a solo homer.
