UNLV running back Cornett listed as doubtful for UNR game

UNLV senior running back Tim Cornett hobbled away from Rebel Park on crutches Tuesday, looking nowhere close to being ready to play a football game.

The Rebels listed him as doubtful for Saturday’s 3 p.m. game at archrival UNR with what was called a leg injury. Cornett was hit hard on his right knee in last Saturday’s 38-14 loss at Fresno State.

“As of now, he couldn’t play,” coach Bobby Hauck said. “We’re hopeful, but I listed him as doubtful for a reason.”

The decision on Cornett’s playing status won’t be made quickly.

“We’ll try all the way up to game time to see if we can get him out there,” Hauck said. “He’s got to be able to go in order to do it. If not, then somebody else has got to go.”

Juniors Shaquille Murray-Lawrence or Adonis Smith would receive the start if Cornett isn’t available. Murray-Lawrence has rushed for 359 and two touchdowns on 37 carries, and Smith has run for 56 yards and two TDs on 19 attempts.

Freshman Keith Whitely, who has 56 yards on 10 carries, also could receive playing time.

The Rebels certainly could use a healthy Cornett, who has rushed for 709 yards and nine touchdowns on 133 carries. He also is the school’s career rushing leader with 3,158 yards.
