The Angels had to use a helicopter to dry the outfield — VIDEO
Following the Los Angeles Angels‘ first home rainout in 20 years Sunday night, the team took extreme measures to ensure the Angel Stadium field would be dry before Monday‘s doubleheader against the Boston Red Sox.
The Angels brought in a local police helicopter Monday morning to hover over the field and help dry out the turf.
Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia said using a helicopter was nothing compared to what local firefighters once did during a rain-delayed Babe Ruth playoff game Scioscia played in in his native Pennsylvania.
"We played a Babe Ruth state championship game in Pennsylvania, and when it stopped raining, all of a sudden some fire trucks came, guys came out and poured gasoline on the basepaths and lit them on fire, and we played about 40 minutes later," Scioscia said. "So I‘ve seen some stuff."
During Sunday night‘s rare rain delay, the Angels reached out to the Red Sox on Twitter for advice on killing time.
"Hey @RedSox…so, what are we supposed to do in a rain delay? We‘re a little new to this…," the team posted.
The Red Sox suggested they let their fans decide what music to listen to while they waited, posting, "Well… We usually let #RedSoxNation decide our rain delay playlist with a little #TweetYourTunes. Got some good jams lined up?"
Not quite, the Angels replied, "We haven‘t had a rainout in 7338 days. Our playlist is a little outdated. The mix tape‘s 1st track is TLC‘s Waterfalls #DontGoChasin."
