San Diego selected to host 2016 MLB All-Star game

The San Diego Padres were selected Thursday as the hosts for the 2016 All-Star Game.

Outgoing commissioner Bud Selig announced the decision at the final owners’ meeting before he steps down on Jan. 24.

The All-Star Game in San Diego’s Petco Park marks only the second time since 1963 that it will be hosted by the same league in back-to-back years. The 2015 game will be played in July in Cincinnati’s Great American Ball Park.

The last time baseball’s All-Star Game came to San Diego was 1992. Petco Park opened in 2004.

The Baltimore Orioles were expected to land the 2016 game, but a legal fight with the Washington Nationals over broadcast rights fees might have hurt their chances.

The last time one league hosted back-to-back All-Star games was in 2006-07 at Pittsburgh’s PNC Park and San Francisco’s AT&T Park.
