Reutimann continues career week by taking Dover pole

DOVER, Del. — David Reutimann played the Sprint Cup waiting game and again came out on top.

Reutimann ran a lap of 156.794 mph on Friday and captured the pole at Dover International Speedway, four days after he won his first career Cup race.

The victory in the Coca-Cola 600 came after three rain delays at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in North Carolina. Reutimann then went out 11th on Friday and watched other drivers take a shot on the concrete track at trying to knock him off the pole.

Points leader Jeff Gordon challenged until the No. 24 got loose and slammed into the wall. He’ll use his backup car for Sunday’s race and start 42nd.

Once that threat was gone, Reutimann’s second pole of the season was all his.

“I’m kind of a nervous person anyway, so waiting around to see if we won the race and then waiting around to see everybody have a shot at us became nerve-racking over time,” he said.

Reutimann, 39, captured his second pole of the season for Michael Waltrip Racing and third of his 76-race career.

Kasey Kahne was second and Juan Pablo Montoya third. Reed Sorenson and Greg Biffle rounded out the top five.

Las Vegas-born drivers Kyle and Kurt Busch will start sixth and 19th.

TRUCKS — At Dover, Del., Friday’s Camping World Series race was postponed because of rain and was rescheduled for 3 p.m. PDT today, following the Nationwide series race.

The race was washed out after about 40 minutes.

Ron Hornaday Jr. won the pole in qualifying. He ran a lap of 155.541 mph for his 21st pole in 232 career trucks races.

NHRA — At Topeka, Kan., Ashley Force Hood crushed the Funny Car field with a pass of 4.107 seconds (295.59 mph) in the first day of qualifying for the O’Reilly Summer Nationals.

Other class leaders: Antron Brown in Top Fuel, 3.841 seconds (315.71 mph); Mike Edwards in Pro Stock, 6.674 (207.08); and Joe Baker in Pro Modified, 5.974 (241.76).
