Local teams brace for action

Many local race teams will spend Saturday testing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s dragstrip and Bullring during one of the slowest racing weekends until late November.

Even the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is taking the weekend off.

Next week, however, will be much different.

Each of the country’s major racing series will compete, including the first IndyCars event since it absorbed several teams from the defunct Champ Car World Series.

In Southern Nevada on March 29, the NASCAR All-American Series opens at the Bullring, while the Southern Nevada Off-Road Enthusiasts will run a desert race between Jean and Primm.

One of the entrants in the SNORE Mint 400 will be Las Vegan Brian Collins, who is fresh off winning Saturday’s SCORE San Felipe 250 on the east coast of the Baja California peninsula in Mexico.

Collins drove the 232-mile race solo and completed it in 3 hours, 44 minutes, 16 seconds at an average speed of 62.07 mph.

It was a solid effort by Collins Motorsports and marked the first time since 1979 that a Dodge-powered vehicle won a SCORE race — back when Walker Evans won the Baja 1000.

The SNORE event begins Thursday with vehicle technical inspection from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on East Fremont Street.
