Ash, Johnson to resume duel

The Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway has been quiet for most of the past two months, but weekly racing resumes Saturday night with the NASCAR All-American Series.

Five races remain in the featured Super Late Models division, where Dustin Ash leads Justin Johnson 528 points to 496. Ash has won four of the last five feature races. He and Johnson both have five victories.

In addition to Super Late Models, races are scheduled for Late Models, Legends Cars, Chargers, Thunder Roadsters, Bandoleros and Bombers.

At the speedway’s dragstrip, the Pacific Street Car Racing Association returns with its nighttime Labor Day Nationals Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday through Monday, nearly 150 NHRA Jr. Dragsters will converge on the dragstrip for two events, including Sunday’s NHRA Pacific Division championships.

• DRAG RACING — The 53rd annual U.S. Nationals open today and run through Monday near Indianapolis. More than 1,000 race teams are expected to compete.

The event features the Skoal Showdown, in which eight Funny Car drivers will race for a $150,000 bonus. Eight Pro Stock Motorcycle riders will compete for $25,000 in the Pro Bike Battle.

• OPEN WHEEL — Alex Lloyd’s win Saturday in the Indy Pro Series at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., gave Henderson resident Sam Schmidt his third season owners title in the developmental series.

• NASCAR — Ricky Rudd will become the second NASCAR driver to start 900 races Sunday at California Speedway in Fontana, Calif. Richard Petty has 1,185 starts.

• DESERT RACING — Motorcycle rider Brandon Smith of Hesperia, Calif., died in a single-vehicle racing accident on Aug. 24 in the Vegas to Reno event in the Best in the Desert Series. The funeral for the 19-year-old is today in Hesperia.
