Mayweather denies losing $10.4 million on Broncos bet
Floyd Mayweather Jr. has denied betting millions on the Denver Broncos to win the Super Bowl.
During the Seattle Seahawks’ rout of Denver in Sunday night’s game, rumors circulated on social media that Mayweather had bet $10.4 million on the Broncos.
High-profile accounts including NFL Access, a popular football news account not associated with the NFL, tweeted the rumor, including a photo of Mayweather pointing to stacks of cash.
At least one TV station fell for the hoax, broadcasting the photo during coverage Sunday night. The photo actually was taken in Las Vegas in 2012.
Mayweather took to Instagram on Sunday to put the rumor to rest.
“For the record, I did NOT bet $10 million on the Broncos,” he posted. “As a matter of fact, I didn’t bet at all.”
He said he can’t control what rumors get started, but the publicity keeps him relevant.
“The only thing I would bet $10 million on is MYSELF,” he continued. “From the looks of my record, I’m a guaranteed WIN!!!”
Mayweather has a career record of 45-0 with 26 knockouts.
The boxer also was getting attention Monday for taking to Instagram and Twitter to ask fans to vote on whether his next opponent should be Amir Khan or Marcos Maidana.
Mayweather has been coy about who he will fight next, with some hoping for a matchup between him and Manny Pacquiao. Mayweather defeated Saúl Álvarez in Las Vegas in September.
