On The Acorn gains win in Jim Murray Handicap

On The Acorn beat Prospect Park by a half-length Saturday in the $250,000 Jim Murray Memorial Handicap at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, Calif.

Ridden by Victor Espinoza, On The Acorn covered 1 1/2 miles on the turf course in 2:20.07 and paid $7, $3.40 and $2.60. Prospect Park returned $3 and $2.40, and Notable Guest paid $2.60 to show.

Also: Songster scored a front-running victory in the $105,400 Bold Ruler Handicap at Belmont Park in New York.

Making his first start since August, Songster ran the six furlongs in 1:08.80.

Songster, the 1-2 favorite ridden by Edgar Prado, beat Dashboard Drummer by 2 1/2 lengths.

Duke wins in first round of NCAA Tournament

Zack Greer scored five goals to lead top-seeded Duke to an 18-3 rout of Providence in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Durham, N.C.

Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year Matt Danowski had two goals and a career-high seven assists, setting the school’s career assist record and helping the Blue Devils (15-2) win their 10th straight.

Last season was canceled after eight games for Duke amid rape allegations against three players who ultimately were exonerated.

Also: John Grant had three goals and five assists to help the Rochester Knighthawks win the National Lacrosse League championship with a 13-11 victory over the Arizona Sting in Glendale, Ariz.

Ex-Cup champion Miller leaving U.S. ski team

Former Olympic medalist and World Cup champion Bode Miller is leaving the U.S. ski team, ending his contentious relationship with the federation that oversees the sport in this country.

The fiercely independent Miller has been at odds with the association for years, and there long had been rumblings that he would leave the team.

Miller, 29, won two silver medals at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, but was shut out at the 2006 Turin Games despite being a favorite in nearly every Alpine discipline. He was criticized for spending too much time in local clubs.

Also: Indiana Pacers assistant coach Johnny Davis says he will interview this week for the team’s vacant head coaching job.

Davis told The Associated Press a date has not been set but that he will be given specifics Monday.

Former coach Rick Carlisle said shortly after being fired that assistants Davis and Chuck Person were ready to replace him. Davis said the Pacers interviewed Person on Friday.

American Troy Dumais won the men’s 3-meter springboard final with 464.10 points at the FINA Grand Prix Diving competition in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

China’s Yutong Luo was second with 459.95 points, and American Chris Colwill placed third with 459.20.

In the women’s platform final, Chinese divers Xin Wang and Ruolin Chen placed first and second, scoring 408.65 points and 402.95 points.

Kendrick Farris broke his American record in the clean and jerk in Schaumburg, Ill., lifting 440.7 pounds to win his second consecutive USA Weightlifting national championship.

Farris, 21, had won the 197.2-pound competition when he made his record-setting lift. Adding a snatch of 341.5 pounds, Farris won with a total of 782.5 pounds.

Mike Cammalleri had a goal and an assist to help Canada defeat defending champion Sweden 4-1 in Moscow and advance to the final today against Finland at the hockey world championship.

Mikko Koivu scored in overtime to lead Finland to a 2-1 victory over host Russia.

Abby Wambach scored two goals to help the U.S. women’s soccer team rout Canada 6-2 in an exhibition game in Frisco, Texas.
