Argentina’s Cabrera takes first-round lead
U.S. Open champion Angel Cabrera shot a 4-under-par 66 on Thursday to take a one-stroke lead over Argentine countryman Eduardo Romero after the first round of the Argentina Open in Buenos, Aires.
Cabrera, the 2001 and 2002 champion, had an eagle, four birdies and two bogeys on the Buenos Aires Golf Club course.
Argentine amateur Esteban Martinez was two strokes back at 68 with countrymen Andres Romero and Sebastian Fernandez, England’s Ben Parker, Colombia’s Diego Venegas and France’s Bertrand Coathalem.
Also: Sion Bebb shot a 5-under 67 to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Malelane, South Africa.

Ex-Fresno State coach awarded $19.1 million
A former Fresno State women’s basketball coach was awarded $19.1 million in a sexual discrimination lawsuit that alleged she was fired because she advocated for women’s rights.
The university argued Stacy Johnson-Klein was fired because she was dishonest, potentially dangerous and abusive to her players and assistant coaches.
Johnson-Klein told the Fresno Bee the jury’s unanimous verdict was a victory for women in general and proof the legal system works.

Super welterweight Foreman wins crown
Yuri Foreman (24-0) won a 10-round split decision over Andrey Tsurkan (25-3) to claim the NABF super welterweight title at Paradise Theater in New York.
Tsurkan suffered a cut over his left eye in a fight with no knockdowns.
In a middleweight fight, Sergio Martinez (41-1-1) of Spain stopped Russell Jordan (14-5) of Rochester, N.Y., 59 seconds into the fourth round. Hard rights to the head sent Jordan to the canvas twice in the first round.
Also: John F. Krimsky Jr., a former top fundraiser for the U.S. Olympic Committee, faces child pornography charges in Danbury, Conn. The 68-year-old pleaded not guilty in state court Monday to four counts, including promoting a minor in an obscene performance, criminal attempt at possession of child pornography and third-degree possession of child pornography.
Romario was named coach of the Brazilian club Vasco, the same day the team asked for a quick hearing on the veteran striker’s positive doping test. The 41-year-old star tested positive for the banned substance finasteride in October but claimed he had been using it to prevent hair loss. Finasteride is the active ingredient in the anti-balding medication Propecia.
Minnesota center Mikko Koivu stayed behind to continue rehabilitating a broken bone in his left leg as the Wild left for a five-game trip. Koivu was injured Nov. 17 when Vancouver defenseman Mattias Ohlund hit him in the leg with a two-handed swing of his stick that got Ohlund a suspension.
Wranglers rookie Daniel Manzato has been named the ECHL’s goalie of the month for November. Manzato, 23, was 5-0-0 with one shutout, a 1.57 goals-against average and a .948 save percentage.
College of Southern Nevada’s Tim Chambers has been named the American Baseball Coaches Association regional coach of the year for Division I junior colleges.
