Horse Racing: Today at Santa Anita, Nov. 1

Post Time 10:40 a.m.

Race 1 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf), Purse $70,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up

11 U S Citizen – His one race down the hill was a doozy second; fits well in this wide open opener to BC Day 1.

5 Love de Car – Showed speed in last as the favorite down the hill; there is much speed in here, expect Julien Leparoux to settle a bit.

Long Shot – 8 Pure Loyalty

Race 2 – 7 furlongs, Purse $70,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up

13 Wild Dude – Parking lot post shouldn’t hurt in this 1-turn elongated sprint; Jerry Hollendorfer charge may want to go a little longer.

9 Cat Burglar – Bob Baffert will take money in every race this weekend; this one cuts back from 2-turns for this, an angle I like playing.

Long Shot – 2 Got Even

Race 3 – 1 mile, $200,000 Golden State Juvenile, Cal-breds, 2-year-olds

7 Tamarando – Instead of racing without Lasix in the Juvenile, he’s in here at short odds; looks classier than his Cal-bred foes.

1 California Chrome – Was not disgraced beaten 2-lengths in the Del Mar Futurity; that measures competitive in this step down in class.

Long Shot – 2 Life Is a Joy

Race 4 – 1 mile, $200,000 Golden State Juvenile Fillies, Cal-breds, Fillies, 2-year-olds

8 Stole a Kiss – Tiny edge in one of the hardest races on the card; been away since Del Mar graduation, but was clearly pointed for this.

2 Cal Gal – Doug O’Neill tends to come up big in these spots; was well bet in first two races at Del Mar, then scored at 15/1 odds.

Long Shot – 9 Moving Desert

Race 5 – 1 1/8th miles (turf), $150,000 Twilight Derby, 3-year-olds

2 Charming Kitten – Second best in the Hawthorne Derby when given too much to do late; reunited with barn rider John Velazquez.

10 Gervinho – Solid SoCal turf resume and a square price at 6/1 odds; you’ll see horses that look like this all day at high odds.

Long Shot – 12 Gabriel Charles

Race 6 – 1 3/4 miles, $500,000 Breeders’ Cup Marathon, 3-year-olds and up

9 Pool Play – This distance is for gallopers and this long winded sort fits the bill; just gets warmed up going 10 furlongs or more.

4 Ever Rider – He’s proven at the distance, but unproven at this class; how many allowance races can he run in in Argentina?

Long Shot – 10 Worldly

Race 7 – 1 mile, $1-Million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, 2-year-olds

4 Outstrip – Has run 4 very good turf races in England, all without Lasix; last year of BC rule with no Lasix in the juvenile races.

5 Bobby’s Kitten – Decisive win in the Pilgrim over a decent lot; he runs without Lasix so we’ll see if there is any negative effect.

Long Shot – 2 Giovanni Boldini

Race 8 – 1 mile, $1-Million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, 3-year-olds and up

3 Hymn Book – The pace scenario looks hot and should be screaming for a closer; looked great in last, first time wearing blinkers on.

12 Goldencents – If it weren’t for the parking lot post, he’d be my top choice; tactical speed and we know he loves Santa Anita dirt.

Long Shot – 2 Golden Ticket

Race 9 – 1 mile (turf), $1-Million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, Fillies, 2-year-olds

12 Testa Rossi – Proven winner with or without Lasix; from Chad Brown, a Bobby Frankel protege, who will be the next superstar trainer.

6 Vorda – Is one stride away from being unbeaten among 5 career starts; only question is she’s never gone further than 6 furlongs.

Long Shot – 2 Al Thakhira

Race 10 – 1 1/8th miles, $2-Million Breeders’ Cup Distaff, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

4 Royal Delta – 2-time winner of the Distaff going for 3 straight; better odds after her loss in the Beldame to Princess of Sylmar.

2 Authenticity – Her 8/1 odds are salivating to many handicappers; I can see this finish being a replay of the Personal Ensign at Saratoga.

Long Shot – 6 Princess of Sylmar

Race 11 – 1 1/16th miles, $150,000 President of the United Arab Emirates Cup Invitational, Arabians, 3-year-olds and up

9 Smoke House A – My main angle is he races first time with Lasix; that is a plus, more often than not, with a lot of racehorses.

6 Grilla A – The next Arabian race I win will be my first; this 7-YO has speed and you’ll know by now how the main track is playing.

Long Shot – Sergeant Pepper Mhf A

Best Bet – Tamarando (race 3)

Santa Anita Thursday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 15/1/$3.20; Long Shots, 7/3/$21.80; Best Bet, 1/1/$3.20

Santa Anita Totals – 351/87/$575.00; Long Shots, 168/26/$299.80; Best Bets, 20/10/$36.00

SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY – #9 Golden Galaxy (2/1) in race 7 at Aqueduct. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Thursday, Bourbon Courage ran second at Churchill Downs paying $3.20 to place and $2.40 to show. Stats – 170/114/$927.40; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
