Guard riddles Valley

Cimarron-Memorial’s Mike Cutright found a comfort zone in Sierra Vista’s auxiliary gym on Wednesday.

In fact, Cutright looked pretty comfortable just about anywhere on Wednesday.

The junior guard scored 29 points in the first half against Valley to help the Spartans roll to an 85-50 win in the Sierra Vista Invitational. Cutright finished with 31 before leaving the court with about two minutes to go in the third quarter.

“When he’s on, he is very impressive,” Cimarron coach Steve Boyack said. “He’s unstoppable when he’s hot, yet he can still stay unselfish.”

Cutright hit four 3-pointers in the second quarter and scored in just about every way possible. He hit open 3s, pull-up 3s and fall-away 3s with hands in his face.

“I think they had everybody on him at one time or another,” Boyack said. “There are times when he just gets hot and he’s tough to stop at any range.”

In two games Wednesday, Cutright had 62 points and knocked down 12 3-pointers, despite not setting foot on the court in fourth quarter.

While Cutright was lighting things up on offense, the Spartans were putting on the clamps defensively. Valley shot 18-for-58 from the field (31 percent).
