Playoffs determine women’s golf champions

Laurie Johnson shot rounds of 79-77 at Palm Valley Golf Club in Sun City Summerlin to win her sixth Women’s Southern Nevada Golf Association Amateur Championship. Johnson, a member of the Women’s Golf Association at Paiute Golf Resort, won on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to beat Canyon Gate member Christina Monteiro.

Monteiro shot rounds of 80-76. Kari Higa, Spanish Trail member and 2008 champion, was third shooting 78-87.

It took a three-hole playoff for Sherry Corsello of TPC Summerlin to win her third overall net championship. Corsello, who shot rounds of net 74-72, beat Oasis member Sarah Bowman, who shot 72-74. Soyoung Crabb of Sun City Summerlin was third, shooting net 78-69.

Billy Casper Golf selected to manage Desert Rose

Marking its initial foray in Nevada and increasing its presence to 25 states, golf-course owner/operator Billy Casper Golf has been selected to manage the Desert Rose Golf Course, just minutes east of the Strip.

Golf club open to senior men

The Nevada State Seniors Golf Club is open to men age 50 and older who like to play both competitively and socially. The club was formed in 1974 to encourage friendly meetings and tournaments for senior male golfers residing in Nevada and neighboring states, and to hold an annual club championship.

A monthly event has been conducted without fail since April 1974. Event formats vary each month and include individual stroke play, stableford, blind draw teams, better ball of partner, and team scrambles, as well as two-man team match play. Each June, the club championship, consisting of a 36-hole stroke play event, flighted by age, is held to determine the overall gross and net club champions.

Recent events have been played at courses throughout the valley. Out-of-town trips normally include three days of golf and a social cocktail party on Saturday night.

World Series of Golf returns to Las Vegas

The World Series of Golf is returning to Las Vegas for a third edition, scheduled for May 11-15. The event will again be played at the Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort.

The nationally televised event combines the skill of golf with the wagering format of Texas hold ’em poker.

The World Series of Golf features a hefty $10,000 buy-in, however, the tournament field will be capped at 125 runners, restricted to golf amateurs only. The top 25 places will each get a piece of the $700,000 prize pool, with the ultimate winner taking home $300,000.

No Doubt to headline Tiger Jam XII

No Doubt will join Tiger Woods on May 16 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center to celebrate Tiger Jam XII presented by AT&T and kick-off the group’s first tour in five years. The event benefits the Tiger Woods Foundation and select Las Vegas-based charities.

The evening’s highlights will include top-notch epicurean fare and exclusive live and silent auctions featuring one-of-a-kind luxury items. Following the dinner and auctions, the celebration will progress to the Mandalay Bay Events Center stage, where Woods will introduce Grammy Award winners Gwen Stefani, Tony Kanal, Tom Dumont and Adrian Young for a rocking concert.

Kruger to host Coaches vs. Cancer classic

UNLV head coach Lon Kruger, the American Cancer Society and the Las Vegas Founders have announced the return of the Coaches vs. Cancer Las Vegas Golf Classic on May 31-June 2.

Several of the nations’ top basketball coaches and sports fans are invited to join host Kruger for the three-day event.

A Party at the Palms will tip off the event May 31 at 7 p.m. Guests can meet their favorite college basketball coaches at the exclusive party and silent auction in the Palms’ two-story, 10,000-square-foot Hardwood Suite, equipped with its own basketball court and scoreboard. Tickets cost just $100 per person and include cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction and live entertainment.

Two days of golf will follow with the first round of golf at Southern Highlands Golf Club on June 1 and a the second round at TPC Canyons on June 2.
