Gorman hosts nation’s No. 1 team tonight
The nation’s No. 1 team comes to town, and the area’s Sunrise Region teams start league play in high school football this week. Here’s a look at some of the week’s top matchups.
Booker T. Washington (Fla.) at Bishop Gorman (4-1) – This one features the nation’s No. 1 team against the best in the area. The Tornadoes have outscored opponents 212-30 in five wins, and have eight players who already have committed to play at Division I schools. The Gaels should have their hands full.
Canyon Springs (4-0, 0-0 Northeast League) at Silverado (1-3, 0-0) – Canyon Springs is one of just two area Division I teams with an undefeated record at this point, and the Pioneers will try to continue the win streak on the road. The Skyhawks have just one win, but played Palo Verde tough last week.
Liberty (2-3, 0-0 Southeast) at Coronado (1-3, 0-0) – A rematch of last year’s Sunrise Region title game surprisingly features two teams with losing records. Liberty has lost to three tough out-of-state teams, and looks ready to make a run at the league title.
Arbor View (2-1) at Las Vegas (3-1) – This exciting, non-league matchup features teams with vastly differing philosophies. The Aggies run the double wing and have completed just three passes in three games. Las Vegas’ spread offense looks to go to the air often, and quarterback Trevor Swenson has passed for 982 yards and 10 TDs.
Sierra Vista (1-2) at Desert Oasis (2-1) – The Mountain Lions have made strides under first-year head coach John Foss, and hope to even their record before the start of Northwest League play. The Diamondbacks were outplaying Canyon Springs last week, but a pair of turnovers early in the third quarter doomed them in a 30-7 loss.
The Meadows (3-2, 2-1 Division III Southern League) vs. Agassi Prep (4-1, 3-1) at Rancho – The top small-school matchup of the night features a pair of teams looking to grind things out on the ground. The battle between The Meadows’ Bryson Navallo and Agassi’s Kobe Williams on the ground could decide this one, and the winner has the inside track to second place in the league and a home playoff game.
