Bishop Gorman football loses national ranking

For the first time in five years, Bishop Gorman’s football team does not have a number next to its name.

After a blowout loss at home to No. 3 Mater Dei (California), the Gaels lost their No. 11 rankings and slid out of the USA Today Super 25 rankings. It is the first time since the 2013 season Gorman has not been nationally ranked.

The Gaels went undefeated from 2014-16 and claimed three national championships. They won 55 straight games from 2013-17 before falling to Mater Dei on the road last season.

Gorman will travel to Centennial (Arizona) next week, then host Orem (Utah) on Sept. 7. The Gaels conclude their national schedule by traveling to face No. 10 De La Salle (California) on Sept. 14.

Mater Dei held steady at No. 3, behind No. 2 St. John Bosco (California) and No. 1 IMG Academy (Florida). IMG Academy will visit the valley on Sept. 7 when it takes on Liberty. Chandler (Arizona), ranked No. 8 to begin the year, will play Faith Lutheran at Liberty on Sept. 8. Chandler fell out of the top 25 after Week 1.
