FISHING REPORT
• LAKE MEAD — Boaters have been finding success for smallmouth and largemouth bass in the upper reaches of the lake. The fish have held near structure and brush. Anglers have been taking the fish with crankbaits, plastic worms and tube baits.
Stripers are pushing shad to the surface and creating opportunities for top-water fishing. Top-water action should pick up as striper boils increase in intensity.
Anglers are reeling in small stripers on cut bait and live shad in the Overton Bay arm.
• LAKE MOHAVE — “Slow” is the word out of Cottonwood Cove. Anglers have found success for stripers, catfish and largemouth bass.
• LAS VEGAS URBAN PONDS — Catfish were stocked in all five ponds this past week.
Fishermen should fish on the bottom with night crawlers, chicken livers or prepared catfish bait. Using a slip rig is a good way to feel when fish take the bait.
• EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR — A quality campground, warm showers and trout fishing make this a popular destination.
Mornings and evenings are cool and are the best times to cast for rainbow and tiger trout. Flies and spinners are generally good for the more active angler. PowerBait or worms can be productive for more sedentary fishermen.
• ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR — Anglers have been catching crappie, largemouth bass and rainbow trout. The crappie bite should be slowing. Poppers, streamers, spinners and plastic baits work well for bucket mouths. Try worms, PowerBait, spinners and flies for trout.
• KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA — With daytime temperatures getting warmer, action for rainbow trout is tapering off and will continue to as the fish go deep to escape the heat. Fish the deep pockets and shaded areas.
• ELY AREA — Trout fishing at Comins has been slow all spring, as northern pike have taken their toll on this popular fishery. Pike were illegally planted near the turn of the century. The pike population has soared, and the water’s trout population has declined.
Anglers pursuing trout may want to consider Cave Lake or Illipah Reservoir.
