ESPN cart runs over Mississippi State mascot
While most Mississippi State fans were cheering their team to an Egg Bowl overtime win over rival Ole Miss, the school’s mascot was being treated for a compound fracture.
NFL.com is reporting that an ESPN camera cart ran over the left leg of Bully, the Mississippi State mascot during the game’s fourth quarter. In the time since the accident, she has undergone two surgeries – one on Thursday and one on Friday.
Mississippi State athletic director Scott Stricklin tweeted that the person in the costume was a female student named Michaela Mills.
USA Today reported that Mills stayed in character and kept her Bulldog headgear on the entire time she was carted off the field.
Network camera carts are supposed to stay on a designated path during live broadcasts, according to NFL.com, so it’s unclear how exactly the accident occurred.
Students who portray Bully at games are paid up to $1,000 per semester, according to Philly.com.
