Coronado continues turnaround

A month ago, Basic could do no wrong on the football field, and Coronado couldn’t do anything right. But the roles are reversed now for the Southeast Division schools.

The Cougars, who lost four of their first five games this season, erupted for four consecutive second-half touchdowns en route to a 40-26 rout of the host Wolves on Friday night.

Coronado (5-4, 3-2) notched its fourth straight win, and Basic (5-4, 1-4) suffered its fourth consecutive loss.

Cougars coach Alex Moore said the key to his team’s turnaround was a closed-door meeting a day after a 38-0 drubbing by Del Sol left Coronado at 1-4.

“The kids did a little soul searching over the weekend and came out Monday ready to go,” he said. “They’ve stepped it up since the Del Sol game. They got punched in the mouth and took it personal ever since then.”

Derek Eamon rushed for 181 yards on 17 carries and scored two touchdowns, and Brady McManus threw for 148 yards and two scores to lead Coronado’s attack. Colton Schofield returned an interception for a touchdown and had two sacks to spark the Cougars’ defense.

Basic quarterback Josh Ross threw for 243 yards and two TDs and ran for a score. But he lost two fumbles on muffed handoffs, was picked off on consecutive plays and was sacked five times as the Wolves squandered 12-0 and 18-14 leads.

“We just ran out of steam, and that has really hurt us in a lot of games this year,” Wolves coach Cliff Frazier said.

Basic scored a late touchdown and 2-point conversion for the final margin, and the game was called with 1:55 left after Wolves kicker Kelly Armistead got hit hard on the ensuing kickoff and lay motionless on the field for several minutes as players from both teams knelt near him at midfield.

Armistead was eventually helped off the field and diagnosed with a concussion.

The Lions decided to go for the victory, but Akil Sharp was stopped at the 1, and Spring Valley won its fourth game in five tries.

The loss was Sierra Vista’s fifth by seven points or fewer.

Spring Valley (7-2, 4-1) scored on a 7-yard Tracy Lide run and a 72-yard pass from Anton Stallworth to Brandon Weisenberger to take a 14-0 lead late in the third period.
