TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $30,000, Starter allowance $40,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
3 Cuvee Exchange – John Sadler got away with one debuting for a $40K price tag; suspect she won’t see another tag from now on.
2 Oscillator – 6 starts, 6 finishes in the money; she is consistent, that’s a given, but appears to lack a killer instinct.
Long Shot – 6 Briteness
Race 2 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $23,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, 3-year-olds
9 I’m Not Gray – Exits a key race full of KY Derby hopefuls; taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming.
4 Kirkoroth – Ran twice in Kentucky for Michael Ewing; is a first time gelding today, so improvement is expected.
Long Shot – 2 Tricky Shane
Race 3 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
9 Bromelia – With the turf rail out 30 feet, it’s good to have speed, early or tactical; exits a bullet workout.
11 Swingaway – Must draw in off the also eligible list; like a parking lot post down the hillside turf course.
Long Shot – 2 Saturday’s Girl
Race 4 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $32,000, Claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
1 Roar Baby Roar – Has never run on dirt, that’s the main question; shows back class and tactical speed to sit a nice trip.
6 Hout Bay – Didn’t run badly on turf in last, but that’s not her bag; she is proven much better on organic dirt.
Long Shot – 9 Your Special Day
Race 5 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 4-year-olds and up
4 Doubledown On Ten – Good name for we Las Vegas horseplayers; huge class drop from $50K to $20K, that’s a red flag drop.
12 An Shanachie – Another Kentucky invader from Michael Ewing; taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming.
Long Shot – 1 Bull Time
Race 6 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $30,000, Starter allowance $30,000, 3-year-olds
2 He’s Not too Shaby – No secret first time out, then won at a juicy 5/1 odds; may be a useful sort for Jeff Mullins.
3 Sacred Ovation – This colt had to finish first twice to graduate; Peter Miller adding the blinkers on today.
Long Shot – 7 Derringer
Race 7 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $25,000, Cal-breds, 4-year-olds and up
2 Motown Men – Draw a line thru the Zia Park Derby; returns to turf where he ran OK in the Generous, speed with the turf rail out.
7 Unusual Jazz – Has won four times of sod so he is a dangerous horse; Tyler Baze will sit mid-pack and try them late.
Long Shot – 5 Unusual Beam
Race 8 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
5 Pastoria – Solid edge in a putrid looking field; ran like a short horse in last off a year hiatus.
8 Night Teller – Figures to sit in arrears and pick off tired horses one by one in the stretch; this is a terrible bunch.
Long Shot – 6 Madelineispickin
Best Bet – 3 Cuvee Exchange (race 1)
Santa Anita Park Thursday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 15/4/$24.80; Long Shots, 7/2/$19.00; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
