Horse Racing: Today at Santa Anita, October 24

Post Time 1 p.m.

Race 1 – 6 furlongs, Purse $30,000, Starter allowance $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

2 Faith Hope Love – Claimed by John Sadler out of a last gasp maiden win; looks like lone speed today, but has been faint hearted.

1 Patriotic Brother – Patrick Biancone was glad this one did not get claimed in debut; key for me is she runs protected tonight.

Long Shot – 3 More Stormyweather

Race 2 – 1 1/8th miles (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $35,000, Claiming $32,000, 3-year-olds and up

2 Mambo Man – In a race with multiple early speed types, this closer will be flying fast late; sliding down the claiming ladder too.

6 Grandstand – Has tactical speed to sit a nice trip; just missed in last, gets Joe Talamo for the injured Kent Desormeaux.

Long Shot – 1 Stoney Fleece

Race 3 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 2-year-olds

1 Redshirt – This filly is bred to go long; expect further improvement in her third career start, saves all the ground too.

6 Olivia’s Greatdane – Ran very well, but greenly, in career debut; slow early, fast late, will improve for Bob Baffert in second start.

Long Shot – 7 Dad’s Princess

Race 4 – 1 1/8th miles, Purse $16,000, Claiming $12,500, 3-year-olds and up

2 Stolen Property – Ran fast, but didn’t beat much, in maiden claiming win at Fresno; this is clearly a much tougher assignment.

4 Go Black Tie – Sliding down the claiming ladder to this much easier task; gets the weight off with bugboy Drayden Van Dyke.

Long Shot – 5 Secret Wishes

Race 5 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $31,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up

7 Aperfectdaytofly – Has shown steady improvement with each of four starts; last race, if repeated, may be good enough to upset.

10 Smokey’s Legacy – Key vote for me is Rafael Bejarano taking the call; Kent Desormeaux is rumored to be coming back very soon.

Long Shot – 8 Sibernation

Race 6 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $56,000, 3-year-olds and up

5 Snuggley Bear – Tiny edge in another difficult heat; his starts down the hillside course are the best of his meager career.

3 Act – Key will be how tight he is coming back off a 7-month hiatus; showed ability, especially in his last career start.

Long Shot – 6 Tap Dancing

Race 7 – 1 1/4 miles, Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up

5 Songforjohnmichael – To say any in the field is suited for a marathon is overstating it; it’ll be a survivor race to the wire.

3 Valley Cat – If anyone can nurse a horse the KY Derby distance, it’s the head on Rafael Bejarano; will sit chilly into the stretch.

Long Shot – 4 Timeless Indy

Race 8 – 6 furlongs, Purse $23,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, 2-year-olds

11 Arigata – If he can repeat his debut race at Del Mar, he’ll win this; the entire field is amazingly slow for the finale.

3 Aaron’s Thunder – The key for me is he runs today as a first time gelding; that has woken up even Kelso, Forego and John Henry.

Long Shot – 8 Jet Trick

Best Bet – 1 Redshirt (race 3)

Santa Anita Thursday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 15/5/$38.40; Long Shots, 7/2/$10.60; Best Bet, 1/0/$0

Santa Anita Totals – 292/73/$448.20; Long Shots, 142/19/$219.20; Best Bets, 17/10/$38.80

SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY – #7 Requestada (3/1) in race 6 at Keeneland. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Thursday, Looking Cool won at Keeneland paying $3.40 to win, $2.40 to place and $2.40 to show. Stats – 163/94/$903.00; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
