Today at Santa Anita
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $47,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 2-year-olds
2 Fiftyshadesofhay – Was flattered when Madame Cactus won her next start; been well bet in both career starts.
5 Majestic Minister – Class relief from the grade 1 Chandler for this MSW; race two back behind Scarlet Strike was a good one.
Long Shot – 4 Blonde Fog
Race 2 – 6 furlongs, Purse $53,000, Optional claiming $62,500, 3-year-olds and up
4 Cyclometer – Returns to her preferred track, Santa Anita; tactical speed to lead or sit close up.
3 So Brilliant – Ran like a short horse in last for Bob Baffert; expect improvement in a tighter race tonight.
Long Shot – 2 Don Tito
Race 3 – 1 mile, Purse $20,000, Claiming $12,500, 3-year-olds and up
6 Tiz Liberty – Looked like a completely different horse off the claim by Vladimir Cerin; repeat race will win this too.
3 Achak – Red flag class drop from $40K to this; if the old veteran has anything left, he’ll be around at the end.
Long Shot – 5 Coluda
Race 4 – 1 1/8th miles (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $35,000, Claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
3 Lamm – Exits a key race where Joe Carl and Big Son of a Gun won next out; returns to sod where he has a strong resume.
2 Hurricane Lake – Logical chalk was flattered when Green Secret won next time out; only 1-for-11 on turf, worth trying to upset.
Long Shot – 6 So Elite
Race 5 – 6 furlongs, Purse $23,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, Fillies, 2-year-olds
5 Miss Sweet Afleet – Sliding down the maiden claiming ladder to this; her debut race is fast enough to beat these.
4 Big Variety – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; need not be much to upset these slowpokes.
Long Shot – 6 Princesa Corredora
Race 6 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $47,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
3 Jules Journey – Tiny edge in a real difficult heat; like the spunk he showed in his turf debut down the hillside course.
2 Ashley’s Bambino – Logical chalk figures to be a short priced favorite; Rafael Bejarano returns off a 3-day suspension.
Long Shot – 6 Jolly Joseph
Race 7 – 1 mile, Purse $50,000, Optional claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
6 Maker Or Breaker – Bob Baffert filly is meant to be a good one; by Empire Maker, is a half-sister to Indian Blessing.
1 Golden Production – Well regarded filly finally graduated in last at short odds; she has the pedigree to handle 2-turns.
Long Shot – 2 Glowing Spirit
Race 8 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 15 feet), $65,000 Lure, 3-year-olds and up
2 Ryehill Dreamer – He clearly is the classiest horse in the race; two knocks, been away 18-months and he is a 6-YO gelding.
5 Temple’s Door – Ran evenly in the grade 2 John Henry; could upset because he is the in form horse right now.
Long Shot – 1 Red Sun
Race 9 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $23,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, 2-year-olds
10 Harlington Night – Sliding down the maiden claiming ladder to this bottom level; debut race is fast enough to beat slowpokes.
12 Majestic Patron – Jeff Bonde is pulling out all the stops; this is a first time gelding and with blinkers on.
Long Shot – 2 Generally Ours
Best Bet – 5 Miss Sweet Afleet (race 5)
Santa Anita Saturday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 18/6/$39.00; Long Shots, 9/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Totals – 324/79/$589.20; Long Shots, 165/27/$284.80; Best Bets, 19/5/$14.60
