Today at Hollywood Park
By Richard Eng
Post Time 12:30 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 furlongs (turf), Purse $48,000, Allowance, 3-year-olds and up
1 Boompa – Exits a key race where he was beaten only 3-lengths; saves ground inside, an edge in Inglewood turf sprints.
7 Robie the Cat – Ran like a short horse off a 18-month hiatus; should improve second time out for Richard Mandella.
Long Shot – 6 Guest Star
Race 2 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $32,000, Starter allowance $40,000, Fillies, 2-year-olds
3 Sultry Season – Was overmatched in last after an impressive debut win; eligible due to a maiden claiming $30,000 win.
5 Jesse’s Giacomo – Gets class relief from a $100K stakes for this; broke her maiden at Del Mar against decent foes.
Long Shot – 6 Richiesgirlgotsoul
Race 3 – 1 mile (turf), Purse $48,000, Allowance, 3-year-olds and up
6 No Silent – Beaten favorite four races in a row; had the lead late in three of those races, clearly lacks killer instinct.
3 Veter – Loses his rider Joe Talamo to Tribal Jewel; chance to upset with a perfect ride under Victor Espinoza.
Long Shot – 4 Swift Eagle
Race 4 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $18,000, Claiming $16,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
11 Smil’n From Above – The two times he’s run this distance, he’s been second; tactical speed to be involved throughout.
1 Pumpkin Pie – Sprinter stretching out will save all the ground inside; has the back class to compete with these.
Long Shot – 8 Burton’s Angel
Race 5 – 6 furlongs (turf), Purse $45,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
8 Dress the Part – Cuts back in distance after a poor try in last; her race two back is fast enough to beat these.
9 Corinthian Melody – Ran huge for second in debut at 52/1 odds; won’t be near that price tonight, but showed good ability.
Long Shot – 4 Elusive Jackpot
Race 6 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $30,000, Claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
4 Nextdoorneighbor – He won at this $25K level two races ago; stalker will sit a trip and come grinding in the lane.
2 Stoneside – Third start off a 3-month hiatus; similar stalking style to the favorite, will be rallying late.
Long Shot – 6 Classic Legacy
Race 7 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $45,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 2-year-olds
1 Lady Rosamond – Was well bet in debut, and ran well in debut for Bob Baffert; his babies improve with experience.
5 Iconic Spirit – FTS from John Sadler; he has an uncoupled entry so keep an eye on outsider Rhinestone Diva.
Long Shot – 10 French Curls
Race 8 – 7 1/2 furlongs, $75,000 On Trust, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
4 Red Sun – Like the subtle turn back in distance off a mile turf win; suspect Rafael Bejarano will try to sit off the pace.
7 Macho Dorado – Did everything but win last time in a strong second; repeat race is more than competitive with these.
Long Shot – 8 Killer Bear
Race 9 – 7 furlongs, Purse $18,000, Maiden claiming 420,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
2 Vonn Nez – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; has run twice for a price tag already.
10 Cajun Market – Tepid chalk in a wide open finale; if you’re live in the pick 6 to here, I hope you are spread out.
Long Shot – 1 My Moment Too
Best Bet – 1 Lady Rosamond (race 7)
Hollywood Park Friday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/3/$28.80; Long Shots, 8/2/$30.00; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Hollywood Park Totals – 99/27/$195.80; Long Shots, 51/6/$64.00; Best Bets, 6/2/$8.80
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY – #7 Holiday Soiree (5/2) in race 8 at Laurel Park. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Friday, Inimitable Romanee was scratched at Aqueduct. Stats – 169/116/$1,018.60; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
