Horse Racing: Today at Del Mar, August 1

Post Time 4 p.m.

Race 1 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $38,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

1 Exclusive Girl – Ran well for this price tag in last; can save all the ground and is cutting back in distance.

7 Ryderroo – Logical chalk has nibbler tendency to run second; would be hard to leave out of the trifecta.

Long Shot – 3 Bow Tie Belle

Race 2 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $31,000, Claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up

5 Wonderful Union – Ron Ellis is always one to contend with; this one is dropped in for a price tag, now or never.

3 Volkonsky – He has burned up more money than the U.S. Mint; he teases us by finishing in the money an awful lot.

Long Shot – 2 Go Black Tie

Race 3 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $25,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up

8 Superboot – If you bet a place pick all, this horse is for you; every time out he meets a weaker and weaker group.

6 Tribal Mystery Man – Showed good early speed last time in a pop and stop effort; like the cutback in distance tonight.

Long Shot – 10 Forest Romance

Race 4 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $75,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 2-year-olds

5 Los Gatos – I’d like to get excited about a 2-day Pick 6 C/O; but turf horses are dropping like flies around a Shell no pest strip.

3 Pulmarack – Your edge over me will be in seeing the tote board action on all these FTS; the smart money is usually the right money.

Long Shot – 10 Matty’s Tribal

Race 5 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Claiming $8,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

9 Glorious Rebecca – You might want to think about the ALL button if you can afford it; cheap race is fraught with danger.

5 Chippette – This is for forgiving handicappers only; eased, vanned off in last, gets bugboy Drayden Van Dyke for a drive.

Long Shot – 2 Dixie Deville

Race 6 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $77,000, Optional claiming $20,000, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

5 Jade With Envy – Will be stretching out in distance, but should handle the switch to the synthetic surface; Rafael Bejarano up.

1 Market Quote – This race has been taken off turf and will be run on the main track; don’t mind trainer switch to Cliff Sise at all.

Long Shot – 8 Highly Rated

Race 7 – 7 furlongs, $200,000 Real Good Deal, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds

11 Alert Bay – Tepid chalk in a wildly wide open stakes; if you follow me, you know I like cutback horses and this is one.

13 G. G. Ryder – Offers good value at 10/1 odds and from this parking lot post; long run from the chute to the far turn.

Long Shot – 9 Grazen’s Hope

Race 8 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $25,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up

8 Justa Splash – Bob Baffert cull takes the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; is a first time gelding too.

9 Salt Power – Vann Belvoir is having a very good Del Mar meet; could improve enough in second start off a long layoff.

Long Shot – 5 Lay It On

Best Bet – 8 Superboot (race 3)

Del Mar Thursday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 15/3/$14.20; Long Shots, 7/2/$17.00; Best Bet, 0/0/$0

Del Mar Totals – 197/41/$291.80; Long Shots, 96/9/$85.40; Best Bets, 9/1/$6.60

SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY – #7 Heaven Knows What (12/1) in race 9 at Saratoga. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Thursday, Awesome Vision ran out at Saratoga. Stats – 117/70/$669.20; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
