TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK

By Richard Eng

Post Time 12:30 p.m.

Race 1 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

4 Subtle Greek – Her brief resume towers over those with experience in the field; was flattered when Just Caller won next out.

6 Tocoi Miss – In a bunch of slowpokes, you need to look twice at the FTS; this filly is from a barn that can pop big mutuels.

Long Shot – 5 Warren’s Hopeful

Race 2 – 1 1/4 miles (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse $24,000, Starter allowance $12,500, 4-year-olds and up

3 Skellytown – Sharp win in last and has shown equal ability on grass too; sharp since claimed by Kristin Mulhall.

5 Kim’s Leading Man – Stride late last time in a nice try; poor turf resume so far, but he is an Unusual Heat, so just maybe.

Long Shot – 4 Gallent Gent

Race 3 – 7 furlongs, Purse $26,000, Claiming $25,000, 4-year-olds and up

6 Scored – Second start off a 5-month hiatus; has started just 11 times as a 6-YO, about time he started producing.

7 Papa Terry – Leap of faith in the vote of Rafael Bejarano; only horse to have won last time out in breaking his maiden.

Long Shot – 3 Carnivore

Race 4 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse $34,000, Claiming $32,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

1 Lady Alex – Returns to turf after a sharp win over the main dirt track; she is better on grass and synthetics.

5 Siberian Heart – Tried a different strategy in last blasting to the front end; expect Joe Talamo to ride different here.

Long Shot – 3 Bellini Bliss

Race 5 – 6 furlongs, Purse $34,000, Claiming $32,000, 3-year-olds

7 Runaway Wildcat – Won wire to wire in last; he is proven to not need the lead to succeed, we’ll see what Martin Garcia does.

5 Tonzatrouble – Rallied from the clouds to get up in the nick of time; both his wins are when he stalked the early pace.

Long Shot – 8 Call Me Later

Race 6 – 6 furlongs, Purse $54,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies, 3-year-olds

5 Screaming Regal – Like the turn back in distance where she should be flying late; big rider switch to Rafael Bejarano.

14 Swiss Charm – Parking lot post will give her a bird’s-eye view of the field; expect Joel Rosario to make the right move.

Long Shot – 7 Excessively Trick

Race 7 – 1 mile, Purse $56,000, Optional claiming $80,000, 3-year-olds

3 Wilburn – Impressive MSW debut win and he beat a good group too; with his pedigree, he has a super high ceiling.

1 Uncle Sam – No shame losing in the Sham to Tapizar; Bob Baffert regrouped in giving this guy a confidence builder.

Long Shot – 5 Special Kid

Race 8 – 6 1/2 furlongs, $150,000 Potrero Grande, 4-year-olds and up

1 Atta Boy Roy – He should be the quickest away from the gate; hate the rail, but he’s got only one gear regardless.

7 Crown of Thorns – This clearly is not his best distance; he has to start the season somewhere, best stride will come late.

Long Shot – 5 Captain Cherokee

Race 9 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $23,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds

4 Silver Luna – Claimed by Steve Knapp and spotted nicely to win; when P Val takes over, his horses improve a step or two.

2 A Golden Jet – Claimed by Ted West, expect improvement here too; her debut race remains her best effort.

Long Shot – 6 Whiskers and Rye

Best Bet – 3 Wilburn (race 7)

Santa Anita Park Saturday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 18/5/$27.40; Long Shots, 10/1/$12.20; Best Bet, 0/0/$0

Santa Anita Park Totals – 999/273/$1,756.90; Long Shots, 498/78/$754.80; Best Bets, 57/26/$103.50

SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY – 8 Capt. Candyman Can (3/1) in race 6 at Gulfstream Park. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Saturday, Close It Out won at Gulfstream Park paying $19.60 to win, $7.20 to place and $3.20 to show. Stats – 56/41/$333.40
