Giants’ rookie tosses first no-hitter of the season

NEW YORK — San Francisco rookie right-hander Chris Heston threw the first no-hitter of the season as the Giants beat the New York Mets 5-0 Monday night at Citi Field.

The only baserunners Heston allowed were two hit batters in the fourth inning and one in the ninth. He escaped the fourth inning with a double play, and he struck out three in the ninth, including Ruben Tejada to end the game.

Heston (6-4) struck out 11 and didn’t issue a walk.

The Giants scored three runs on nine singles in the first five innings against Mets starter Noah Syndergaard (2-4). Left fielder Nori Aoki led the game off with an infield single, went to third on a single by second baseman Joe Panik and scored when center fielder Angel Pagan beat out the back end of a potential double play.

The Giants loaded the bases on three singles in the fourth before Heston helped his own cause with a two-out, two-run single between third and short.

NOTES: Both teams had last-minute lineup changes. Mets C Kevin Plawecki, who has been battling a sinus infection, felt dizzy during batting practice and was benched for Anthony Recker. About half an hour before first pitch, the Giants scratched RF Gregor Blanco and replaced him with Justin Maxwell. … Giants RF Hunter Pence missed his seventh straight game due to right wrist tendinitis. Manager Bruce Bochy said Pence could be headed to the disabled list if he doesn’t display improvement by Wednesday. … A pair of injured Mets, C Travis d’Arnaud and 2B Dilson Herrera, were in the lineup for Triple-A Las Vegas’ afternoon game against El Paso. Both players could be activated as soon as Wednesday. … One of the ceremonial first pitches was thrown by Victor Espinoza, the jockey who rode American Pharoah to horse racing’s first Triple Crown in 37 years.
